Alex Magaña for Denver Schools

A Parent.
An Educator.
A Leader.

Ready to move Denver schools forward—by putting students first.

Meet Alex Magaña

From Classroom to Leadership—Rooted in DPS, Driven by Students

For 25 years, Alex has served Denver’s students—as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and executive director across Northwest, Southwest, and Southeast Denver. He’s not a politician—he’s a parent, an educator, and a leader who’s been in the trenches and knows what it takes to create schools where every child can thrive.

Alex began his journey in Immokalee, Florida, before planting roots in Denver as a Spanish-speaking math teacher at Kepner Middle School. He’s lived the challenges DPS educators and families face firsthand—from juggling multiple jobs to raising two children in the public school system. It’s that lived experience that drives his belief: schools must be places where students are safe, teachers are supported, and families are heard.

When Alex saw what was missing in too many classrooms—resources, belonging, real opportunities—he took action. As principal and executive director, he launched reading programs, strengthened teacher training, and co-created the Beacon School model—a homegrown, community-powered innovation that delivered better outcomes for students and inspired families across the city.

Now, Alex is ready to bring that same commitment to the DPS Board of Education—putting students over politics and solutions over slogans.

“Every decision I make starts with one question—what’s best for our students—and I won’t stop until every child in Denver has the opportunity to thrive.”

Why Alex is Running

How we can build better schools in Denver together!

Safe and Welcoming Schools for Every Student

Every child deserves to walk into a school where they feel safe, seen, and supported. That’s more than just security—it’s emotional safety, a sense of belonging, and school culture that keeps kids coming back because they want to be there.

Preparing Students for the Future

Academic success matters—but the world demands more. Students need to graduate ready to solve problems, think critically, and work well with others. That requires investing in great teachers, updating how we teach, and supporting students' mental, social, and emotional growth.

Leadership That Listens and Delivers

The best solutions come from the people living the experience—families, educators, and students. Alex leads by listening, involving the community, and turning real concerns into real action.
